For the City | Anchor Community Church

What is it?

For the City is a two day service experience for high school and college students. We desire to see the Kingdom come in Dubuque as it is in heaven. By serving, praying, worshiping, and learning, students will have the opportunity to meet God in this special place. While not an iconic city in most people's minds, we believe God desires to do a work here among us.

Why should a youth ministry come to "For the City"?

Learn by doing

Jesus is our best example of combining service with teaching. As the twelve disciples traveled around as apprentices to Jesus, he both taught them and asked them to do the things he did. Many times, however, we teach our students to serve others but do not give them opportunities to do so. At For the City, we combine teaching with service opportunities each day.

Fewer Barriers

Many times on cross-cultural mission trips, it is difficult for students to be effective because of cultural and language barriers. With a local trip, students can jump right in and have gospel conversations, teach about Jesus at kids' clubs, and share their testimonies with those they come in contact with.

Lasting Effects

As your students see God working in a city just like their own, they will discover that God shows up in regular places just as he does in exotic lands. The service projects done here can be easily repeated when you go back home. Your youth group can make it a regular practice to serve your local school, homeless shelter, or neighborhood without struggling to figure out how to do it in your context.

What will it look like?

What will we be working on?

Each group will go to a dedicated service location for that week. This may be a community event like hosting a kids club at a church or serving at a non-profit such as the Dubuque Rescue Mission. These service opportunities allow us to bless the city as well as cultivate relationships and have gospel conversations.

What about meals?

Lunch will be provided on Monday and Tuesday and will be taken to your work sites by your team leader. Dinner will be provided on Monday night. If you have a food allergy, please indicate that on the registration form.

What are the sessions?

Each day there will be a brief morning session with worship, prayer, and a send-off charge. Afternoon and evening sessions will also include biblical teaching to challenge and inspire students to model Jesus' example of service and compassion.

9:00 am - Morning Session

9:30 am - Depart for work sites

12:00 - Lunch at work sites

5:30 - 6:30 pm - Dinner

6:45 pm - Evening session

7:30 pm - Group meeting time

8:30 pm - Dismiss

Registration

General Registration: Register by June 23rd, $20 per person.

Each group is responsible for their transportation to and from the work sites. If you are not coming with a group, we will place you with an existing group or form a group with those who did not come with one.

Additional Q&A

What are the age requirements? For the City is focused on High School and College age students. If you are 13 or over, you are welcome to register even if you are not attending college or are not in school.

What if I do not have a group to come with? We will form groups of students who did not come with a group, or we may add you to an existing group. This will be a great opportunity to meet other students and leaders who are passionate about serving.
